Color Basics
Below we have listed basic information about each individual color that we offer, such a color name, pigment name, pigment index number, and a brief description of hue and behavior. Please keep in mind that physical handling information is rather subjective and different artists will have varying experiences with the same color. We have made this information available so that you can begin to get acquainted with the characteristics and personalities of each color in the G&B line.

Color Name: Red Ochre Pigment: Red Ochre Pigment Index No.: PR102 Description: Smooth, ruddy color. Fine particle size and even application. |

Color Name: Yellow Ochre Description: Earthy warm yellow with a slight tendency towards granulation. Wide value range for a yellow. |

Color Name: Mayan Yellow Description: A cool lemon yellow. With persistence, can be layered to display a deeper, warmer yellow at most intense. Tendency towards flocculation. |

Color Name: Green Earth Description: A well-balanced green suited to depictions of foliage and the like. A shy color with weak tinting strength, re-wets slowly. |

Color Name: Celadonite Description: A cool gray/green with wide range in particle size and variegated color display. Has a visible and tactile texture. |
|
Color Name: Malachite Description: Cool mint green with wide range in particle size and variegated color display. Finest particles show yellow-green, coarser appear emerald. |

Color Name: Mayan Green Description: A cool intense blue/green with a wide value range and tendency towards flocculation. |

Color Name: Vivianite Description: Intense, stormy gray/blue with a soft quality and easy application. Moderate granulating effects. |

Color Name: Mayan Blue Description: Intense indigo blue with a wide value range and high tinting strength. Readily re-wets. Well-suited to monochromes. |

Color Name: Mayan Blue #2 Description: Similar to Mayan Blue, but higher chroma. Wide value range. Mixes bright, clean greens |

Color Name: Purple Ochre Description: Earthy warm plum-leaning purple. Very smooth. Well-suited to shadows. |

Color Name: Violet Hematite Description: Intense gray/purple with granulating and variegation effects, and a mind of its own. Very high tinting strength and a value range. |

Color Name: Mayan Violet Description: High-chroma warm blue or blue/violet. A reasonable alternative to Ultramarine or Lapis. Mild tendency towards flocculation. |

Color Name: Pipestone Description: Earthy warm pink leaning towards red. Wide variety of particle sizes. Moderate to high opacity. Useful for adding warmth. |

Color Name: Brown Ochre Description: Warm brown that dilutes to yellow-brown at most transparent. Even application. |
|
Color Name: Cassel Earth Description: A cool dark brown. Nice alternative to black in landscape painting or natural depictions. Some tendency towards flocculation. |

Color Name: Slate Description: Highly transparent gray with small value range and low tinting strength. A very subtle color. Can be built up. Useful for value work. |
|
Color Name: Graphite Description: Shiny graphite, like your pencil. Shimmers and re-wets easily. High tinting strength. Value range does not go to black at most concentrated. |

Color Name: Shungite Description: A transparent black with a wide value range and fine particle size. |

Color Name: Magnetite Description: A matte black with a wide value range. Tendencies to granulation and flocculation. Can be suspended in a wash and manipluated with a magnet. |

Color Name: Eggshell Description: A grainy white with a low tinting strength. Moderate particle size with tangible texture. |

Color Name: Barite White Description: Smooth warm white with low tinting strength. Some granulating qualities, finer particle size. |
